Jewel’s beautifully personal songs have gone multiplatinum, and her poetry has landed her on the New York Times bestseller list. But there are still elements of her now-fabled story that we don’t know. In her new memoir, Never Broken, Jewel fills in the blanks of her life’s story, recounting struggles with her mother — with whom she hasn’t spoken for over a decade — and her painful 2014 divorce from Ty Murray.

EW announces exclusively that this September, Jewel will embark on a book tour to celebrate both Never Broken and her new album, Picking Up The Pieces. Jewel tells EW that both the album and the book are “very similar in spirit.”

“People are aware of a lot of my background — being raised in Alaska, being homeless — but they don’t really know a lot of what really happened,” she says. “And the darkest of my moments were at the heights of my fame. There was an incredible betrayal that I suffered and had to keep picking myself up from that nobody ever knew about.”

Jewel explains that this book tour will harken back to her earlier days performing in coffee shops, and being fully open with her fans. “In general, the idea will be kind of what I do at my shows, which is telling stories about my life and singing songs,” she says. “Throughout the book there’s some poems and some song lyrics to give some context to show exactly what was going on in my life when I wrote that. The songs are always a by-product of what I was going through, and that will definitely be a part of the book tour.

“I made a career by being honest about my flaws,” she added, “and that actually kept me safe in fame, because it allowed me to change. I’ve always been flawed, I’ve always been a real person, and people have been gracious enough to accept me for who I am and allow me to change and grow. For a kid that got signed at 19, that’s a pretty incredible thing.”

Never Broken will be released September 15, 2015; and Picking Up The Pieces on September 11, 2015.
