Morgan Freeman’s 33-year-old step-granddaughter, E’Dena Hines, was fatally stabbed early Sunday morning in New York City, police confirmed to PEOPLE.
Responding officers found Hines lying in the street outside her home on W. 162nd Street at about 3 a.m., where she was suffering from multiple stab wounds, the NYPD said in a statement. She was taken by EMS to Harlem Hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

In a statement to PEOPLE, Freeman mourned Hines and reflected on her talent.
“The world will never know her artistry in talent, and how much she had to offer. Her friends and family were fortunate enough to have known what she meant as a person,” the actor said. “Her star will continue to shine bright in our hearts, thoughts and prayers. May she rest in peace.”
He also thanked fans for their condolences in a message on Facebook:
Hines is the granddaughter of Freeman’s first wife, Jeanette Adair Bradshaw. The two were married from 1967 to 1979.
