Fresh Prince-like sitcom being developed by Will Smith's company
Will Smith may soon get back into the television business, EW has learned. The actor’s production company, Overbrook Entertainment, is developing a new family comedy. But despite reports earlier on Thursday that the new series would reboot Smith’s The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air for modern audiences, the project will only share some surface similarities to the classic NBC series in that it could be a fish-out-of-water story. As of now, there is no script, concept or network attached to the potential show.
Next year will mark 20 years since Fresh Prince left the airwaves, but Smith has not forgotten his star-making role. The 46-year-old has frequently performed the show’s iconic theme song in public, including on The Ellen DeGeneres Show this past February.
“Every country in the world, that is the thing I am most known for. No matter how big the movies get, it’s Fresh Prince everywhere,” Smith told Graham Norton in a 2012 interview, before performing the theme.
