Taraji P. Henson has someone special in mind when she portrays the no-nonsense Cookie on Empire: her late father.

“He had no buffer,” she told Harper’s Bazaar for their September issue. “He spoke the truth. It’s heroic because in this society we have been trained to be polically correct. Political correctness is bulls—. If I ask you a question right now, the first thing that comes in your mind is the truth. But we’ve all been trained to breathe, digest the question, and manipulate the answer. Cookie doesn’t do that.”

Read the full story over at Harper’s Bazaar, and see Henson in action when Empire returns for its second season Sept. 23.
