Director replied she's 'super curious' about the N.W.A. biopic and to see her hometown on-screen
Straight Outta Compton premieres in theaters this Friday, and Ava DuVernay is eager to see her hometown come to life on-screen. The filmmaker responded to a tweet about the movie from her Selma producer Oprah Winfrey, and the two are already giving love and support to fellow director F. Gary Gray.
Oprah tweeted at DuVernay on Saturday to ask if she’d seen the “powerful” film yet. She replied and said she hadn’t, but added that “super curious” about it:
The director also showed her support for the N.W.A. biopic and the man behind it this past Friday. To promote Straight Outta Compton, Beats by Dre set up a website so that fans could make their own hip-hop-inspired album covers. DuVernay’s is a tribute to her childhood growing up in Compton, California.
DuVernay spoke briefly about her life in Compton to Rolling Stone. “There are no independent movie houses in communities of color in this country,” she said. What kept her passion for film alive, she continued, were her weekly trips to the multiplex with her aunt.
