The challenges faced by transgender men and women are put at the center of About Ray, a new drama from director Gaby Dellal that focuses on how the family of transgender teen Ray (Elle Fanning) deals with his transition from female to male.

In the first trailer for the film, out this September, Ray struggles to transition when his biological dad (Tate Donovan) will not sign the parental consent form approving Ray’s transition. Ray’s lesbian grandmother (Susan Sarandon) questions why Ray can’t just be a lesbian, while his single mother (Naomi Watts) understands, “There is no Ramona anymore, it’s just Ray.”

About Ray hits theaters Sept. 18.
