'Cop Car': EW Review
Imagine Stand by Me directed by the Coen brothers circa Blood Simple. Now take that awesome-sounding mash-up, subtract about 60 percent of the fun, and you’ve got Jon Watts’ coming-of-age thriller, Cop Car.
James Freedson-Jackson and Hays Wellford play 10-year-olds who discover an abandoned police cruiser and take it for a joyride, unaware that it belongs to a menacing, wild-eyed sheriff (Kevin Bacon) and that it has a bloody bad guy in the trunk. Watts, who was recently tapped to direct the next Spider-Man reboot, clearly has a better sense of mood and B-movie mayhem than plotting or pacing. Cop Car feels like a great short stretched into a mediocre feature. C+
