Things take a turn for the weird in this exclusive clip from The Gift.

The psychological thriller (out Aug. 7) from Blumhouse Productions and STX Entertainment tells the story of married couple, Simon (Jason Bateman) and Robyn (Rebecca Hall), whose lives are turned upside down following a chance encounter with one of Simon’s old high-school classmates, Gordo (Joel Edgerton), who soon brings a number of gifts around—and a secret from their shared past.

In the clip, Gordo leaves Simon and Robyn in his home while he steps out to handle a work emergency. The couple are a bit taken aback by Gordo’s departure — especially Simon, who believes Gordo to be “obsessed” with Robyn. His doubts, and jokes, about the host of the evening continue to grow from there.

Despite Simon’s growing mistrust, Edgerton — who also wrote, directed, and produced the film — maintains that there’s no clear antagonist. “Our sympathies ebb and flow with [Simon and Gordo] based on any given moment in the film,” he says, “and the unsettling position for the audience is ‘What is [Gordo] going to do? Why is he there?’ And connected to ‘Why is he there?’ what has Simon done to deserve or not deserve what’s coming?”
