Vince Vaughn has signed on to Mel Gibson’s Hacksaw Ridge, a World War II drama based on the true story of Desmond Doss, America’s first Conscientious Objector to be awarded the Medal of Honor. Deadline reported the casting first.

Andrew Garfield was cast as Doss months ago, and Sam Worthington is set to appear in the film as well. Vaughn will play Sergeant Howell, an officer tasked with preparing his soldiers for battle. Inconveniently for him, of course, Garfield’s character refuses to wield a weapon.

Most recently, Vaughn has been starring in the second season of HBO’s True Detective. His casting in Hacksaw Ridge keeps him doing dramatic work, at least for awhile.

Gibson was announced as the director last November. Shooting will take place in Australia.
