The premise would make Alfred Hitchcock bounce in his seat: An Auschwitz survivor (Nina Hoss) returns to Berlin and encounters the husband who betrayed her to the Nazis. But the thing is, she’s received reconstructive facial surgery and doesn’t tell him her identity. The plot is just implausible enough to keep the film from greatness, but director Christian Petzold (Barbara) stirs up a powder-keg metaphor about rebuilding after war. For its quiet sense of mystery and art-house appeal, Phoenix might be this year’s Ida. B+
