It’s been five years since Harry Styles, Niall Horan, Liam Payne, Louis Tomlinson, and Zayn Malik all tried out for The X-Factor by themselves and failed to advance. But then they were thrown together to form One Direction, the current four-piece world sensation.

Styles celebrated the anniversary on Twitter by thanking fans.

Tomlinson chimed in to remember the occasion.

As did Payne.

The original lineup did not win that season of The X-Factor, landing in third place, but were quickly signed to Simon Cowell’s Syco Music label. Losing the reality show didn’t seem to deter them in any way.
