Jesse Williams on Sandra Bland on Twitter: Addresses racism, police brutality
Sandra Bland was found dead in her jail cell July 13 following an arrest for assault on a public servant after she was pulled over for failure to signal a lane change. As a result, protests have erupted accusing the Waller County Police of racial violence, and Grey’s Anatomy star Jesse Williams contributed his own thoughts Wednesday night on Twitter.
“WE DO NOT BEGIN AS POLICE PROPERTY, to be freed or detained based on some guy’s mood or feeling,” he wrote. “We are not theirs.”
According to video footage from Bland’s arrest, an officer stopped her for failing to signal that she was switching lanes and gave her a written warning before asking her to put our her cigarette. She went on to question why she couldn’t continue smoking, and he then told her to get out of the car. When she refused, the officer opened her door, tried to drag her out himself, and told her she was under arrest.
“A select segment of Americans are granted the privilege of being able to resist said tyranny, scream at it, punch, shove or elude it,” Williams tweeted. “For membership consideration, this club has ONE requirement: the citizen(s) resisting police/the law/status quo must be white.”
Bland eventually got out of her car after the officer pulled out a stun gun out and threatened to “light [her] up.” She continually asked him what she was being arrested for as he attempted to handcuff her. “You are about to break my wrists!” she shouted at one point.
“#SandraBland’s treatment while attempting to travel freely on HER public roadways has been acknowledged as unlawful. She is already dead,” Williams wrote. “Blackness is born to be w/ 2.9 strikes. A life that can & will be snatched by it’s nation at any time, any place. Any age, any gender.”
Williams went on to provide an “easily searchable sampling of the glaring daily white privilege not afforded to millions of Americans who’s lives are forever damanged or destroyed, while millions cheer and/or avert their gaze” that includes the following:
