James Holmes was found guilty of first-degree murder earlier this month for the 2012 Aurora theater shooting that left 12 dead, and Colorado jurors are now considering the death penalty as potential punishment.

Sentencing proceedings began Wednesday, and prosecutors have said previously that Holmes deserves the death penalty. According to the Associated Press, “Holmes’ lawyers are expected to focus on his severe mental illness” and “will argue that life in prison without parole is an appropriate sentence.”
