Even on his day off, Ed Sheeran doesn’t take it easy. The British singer drove five hours Sunday to make a guest appearance at a stacked Manchester Arena gig—and provide musical accompaniment for his friend’s proposal.

Sheeran, who’s on a short break from touring after a string of London shows last week, took to the stage to help out Jake Roche, the 22-year-old singer of the British band Rixton. Roche’s girlfriend—now fiancé!—Jesy Nelson sings in the band Little Mix, which was on a bill that also included James Bay and Mark Ronson.

“Travelled 5 hours to sing our favourite song on his day off,” Roche tweeted. “I will never ever be able to repay you. Love you pal.” He added in an Instagram post: “A year ago today I met her at manchester arena, so it was only right, with a little help from my friend, that this happened. Best day of my life.” Sheeran responded that it was an “absolute pleasure,” thanking Roche for “the KFC.”

Nelson also commented via Little Mix’s Instagram: “The most surreal moment of my life and everyone that I love most was there to share it with us! I feel like the luckiest girl in the world rite now literally cannot stop crying! Future Mrs Roche.”
