Bob Odenkirk can’t really talk — he’s too busy celebrating his first-ever Emmy nomination for acting. For example: In response to “How are you?” the Better Call Saul actor simply screams.

Once he finishes yelling, Odenkirk expresses his surprise at the news (with actual words, thankfully). “Of course, everybody on every show is like, ‘We should get nominated! We’re doing great work!'” he tells EW. “Everybody’s working hard on every show on TV, and so to be picked out is a real surprise to me because I know everyone’s giving it their all.”

Most recently, Odenkirk’s been giving it his all as the title character on AMC’s Better Call Saul, and before that, he appeared as the same character on Breaking Bad. And he’s excited to finally celebrate being on those two critically beloved series: It turns out that he’s attended the past few Emmy Awards, but not for himself — for his wife, a manager in the entertainment business.

“She’s the one who’s been there with purpose. And I’ve been there as just arm candy,” he said. “Now it’s my turn to have a reason to be there!”

This year’s Emmys air Sept. 20. See the full list of nominees here.
