Alien: Neill Blomkamp unveils Sigourney Weaver concept art
Neill Blomkamp just made fans of the Alien franchise very, very excited.
The visionary writer-director of low-fi sci-fi landmark District 9 took to Instagram Thursday to unveil new concept art for his upcoming Alien sequel, which will see actress Sigourney Weaver reprise her iconic role as Ellen Ripley. Also featured in the new art is Michael Biehn as Corporal Hicks, who featured prominently in James Cameron’s 1986’s Aliens.
“”#alien going very well. Love this project,” Blomkamp said on Instagram.
The director originally announced his plans to do the film on Instagram earlier this year, prior to the release of his latest film Chappie, a fable about a sentient robot. He previously had released concept drawings for an Alien project online, sparking widespread speculation that he could someday helm a new movie in the series.
Franchise godfather Ridley Scott is slated to produce Blomkamp’s script. The film is expected to take place after the storyline of Scott’s own Prometheus 2, a follow-up to his 2012 release. Screenwriter Michael Green is penning that film, tentatively due to arrive in 2016.
