Amazon already has multiple original TV shows under its belt — Transparent, Red Oaks, Mozart in the Jungle — but now it’s dipping its toes into the movie business: The company announced Wednesday that it will premiere Spike Lee’s upcoming Chiraq.

The film will be a musical comedy about violence in Chicago starring Nick Cannon, Wesley Snipes, Jennifer Hudson, Angela Bassett, John Cusack, and Samuel L. Jackson. Lee wrote the screenplay with Kevin Willmott and is the film’s sole director.

“I’m honored to be part of the film that will launch Amazon Studios and to tell a story that is so important,” Lee said in a statement. “Please don’t be fooled by the title of Chiraq. This new Spike Lee joint will be something very special. We have assembled a stellar cast.”

The film does not yet have an exact release date, but The Hollywood Reporter reports that Chiraq will debut in December in order to qualify for awards.
