Thirty years ago, Rob Lowe put fire and hairspray together for a quick but memorable moment in St. Elmo’s Fire — and he stands by that decision.

“It was the ’80s,” he said when he stopped by the Entertainment Weekly Lounge at Comic-Con Thursday while promoting Comedy Central’s upcoming Moonbeam City. “There was hairspray everywhere.”

Although he thinks it might have been his idea to light the hairspray on fire, he didn’t do it without some hesitance: “I was afraid that somehow it would blow up,” he said. “That was my worry. But I was able to make it.”

Watch him recount that scene and talk about his role on Moonbeam City — spoiler: it involves cartoon sex — below.
