The View: Rosie Perez announces exit, no new host yet
'We want to make sure that everyone on Twitter calms down,' said Whoopi Goldberg on Wednesday's show
Though Rosie Perez will be making her exit from The View before her first year is up, the host is not packing her bags yet.
The star of Broadway’s Fish in the Dark will finish out the season “because I like to finish things that I start,” she announced during Wednesday’s taping of The View.
“We want to make sure that everyone on Twitter calms down,” interjected Whoopi Goldberg — who, earlier in the show, cited false allegations against the Duke lacrosse team in her latest defense of Bill Cosby. “She’s not leaving today!”
Regardless, Perez, 50, “appreciate[s] the love.” Her last show airs on Aug. 6.
The actress opened the show with a tearful thanks to co-hosts Goldberg and Nicolle Wallace, as well as to ABC and her fans. “I want to thank you for your friendship, Nicolle, and your intelligence and your wit and your sunshine,” said Perez.
“Whoopi, I want to thank you for everything. Your guidance, your professionalism, and most of all your friendship. It’s a dream, sitting here with you, and you are truly the captain of the ship.
“I really want to thank The View,” Perez added. “Thank you very, very much and the entire ABC family for such a great opportunity to be part of such an iconic show that has opened me up to a broader audience and I will be forever grateful for that, but the ones that I want to thank the most are the fans.
“It warms my heart, it really does, every time one of you guys come up to me and say, ‘I love you on The View,’ it just makes my day. And I really want to give a special thank-you to the Latin community. It’s a huge honor to be the first Latina on The View,” Perez said, before asking, “What the hell took you so long?”
Addressing the fans once more, Perez continued: “Your support through this journey as a community has helped me through this year and I will never forget what you have done for me.
“I will always continue to stand up for you guys, for our rights, and for the promotion and empowerment of all women of all colors.”
Though Perez’s replacement has yet to be announced, frequent co-host Michelle Collins could be the latest addition to the roundtable, much in the same fashion Raven-Symoné was added to the panel before her.
