July is still one day away, but that doesn’t mean we can’t start thinking ahead to fall movie season. STX Entertainment released the first trailer for October’s Secret in Their Eyes on Tuesday, a throwback revenge thriller that looks like it would have been right at home on the release schedule in October 1998.

Written and directed by Billy Ray (the screenwriter of Captain Phillips), Secret in Their Eyes focuses on a trio of law enforcement officials, played by Chiwetel Ejiofor, Julia Roberts and Nicole Kidman, and what happens when the shocking murder of Roberts’ onscreen daughter goes unsolved. Continues the synopsis from STX:

Now, thirteen years later, after obsessively searching every day for the elusive killer, Ray finally uncovers a new lead that he’s certain can permanently resolve the case, nail the vicious murderer, and bring long-desired closure to his team. No one is prepared, however, for the shocking, unspeakable secret that will reveal the enduring, destructive effects of personal vengeance on the human soul. Interweaving past and present, this deeply layered mystery explores the murky boundaries between justice and revenge, and asks the question: how far would you go to right an unfathomable wrong?

Based on Juan José Campanella’s 2009 Oscar-winning film, El secreto de sus ojos, The Secret in Their Eyes is out on Oct. 23. Watch the trailer below.
