Oscar's quest for a younger, more diverse voting body continues

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences extended invitations to 322 new members, bringing the total membership to more than 7,000 as their efforts to diversify their base continues. The most prominant invitees in the actors branch include last year’s Oscar nominees and winners: Benedict Cumberbatch (The Imitation Game), Felicity Jones (Theory of Everything), Rosamund Pike (Gone Girl), Eddie Redmayne (Theory of Everything), J.K. Simmons (Whiplash)  and Emma Stone (Birdman). Also invited in the actor category were Elizabeth Banks (Pitch Perfect), Heather Graham (The Hangover), Tom Hardy (Mad Max: Fury Road), Gugu Mbatha-Raw (Beyond the Lights), David Oyelowo (Selma), Dev Patel (Slumdog Millionaire), and Daniel Radcliffe (Harry Potter) among 11 others.

In the director category Whiplash helmer Damien Chazelle scored an invitation and will have to choose whether to accept as a director or a writer, where he was also selected. He will join fellow invitees Bong Joon-ho (Snowpiercer), Niki Caro (Whale Rider), F. Gary Gray (The Italian Job), James Gunn (Guardians of the Galaxy), Malcolm D. Lee (The Best Man Holiday), Lynn Shelton (Laggies), Oscar-nominees Morten Tyldum (The Imitation Game), Edgar Wright (The World’s End), and Andrey Zvyagintsev, the director of the Oscar-nominated foreign language film Leviathan, among 16 others.

In the producer category, Dear White People producer Effie T. Brown was invited by her peers join, along with Wyck Godfrey (The Fault in Our Stars), Dan Lin (The Lego Movie), Reese Witherspoon’s producing partner Bruna Papandrea (Wild), and Rebecca Yeldham (On the Road), among seven others.

The Academy has long been accused of being a homogenous group of older, white men but this year’s selection of 322 new members, the most it has invited since it began publicizing its list in 2005, continues the trend of expanding the membership to a younger and more diverse group of Hollywood insiders.
