Meeting your in-laws for the first time can be awkward and nerve-wracking—especially if your future uncle is the most notorious and feared cocaine kingpin in the world. In Escobar: Paradise Lost, Josh Hutcherson plays Nick, a Canadian surfer who falls in love with a Columbian girl named Maria (Claudia Traisac) who has a little baggage: she’s the beloved niece of Pablo Escobar. Uncle Pablo is slightly suspicious of outsiders, for obvious reasons, and he’s not above using his reputation to put the fear of God in the gringo interloper.

In this exclusive scene from the film, which opens June 26, Escobar (Benicio Del Toro) wakes Nick in the middle of the night to quiz him about his background and romantic intentions. Nothing Escobar says to Nick is technically threatening—but that hardly diminishes the tension and potential danger that Del Toro brings to the scene. As he says in the trailer below, “No one escapes Pablo Escobar.”
