Laurie Metcalf to smash Bruce Willis's ankles in Misery on Broadway
Laurie Metcalf will star as Annie Wilkes opposite Bruce Willis’s Paul Sheldon in the forthcoming Broadway production of Misery, based on the Stephen King novel of the same name. Metcalf replaces Elizabeth Marvel (House of Cards), who has withdrawn from the production due to scheduling conflicts.
The play follows a successful novelist (Willis) rescued from a car crash by a deluded fan (Metcalf), who becomes enraged and holds him captive upon learning that he plans to kill her favorite character. Oscar winner William Goldman, who penned the screenplay for the 1990 film, has written the stage adaptation, which will be directed by Will Frears.
Misery begins previews on October 22 at Broadway’s Broadhurst Theatre, with opening night set for November 15. The play will run for 16 weeks.
Three-time Emmy winner Metcalf was last seen on Broadway in 2013’s The Other Place, playing a successful neurologist whose own mind begins to crumble at the peak of her career. Her other Broadway credits include Brighton Beach Memoirs, November, and My Thing of Love.
