The new Batman: Arkham Knight trailer is a strange one. It comes just before the release of the game and offers a look at something completely different than any previous trailers or demos have showcased.

Spoilers for 2011’s Batman: Arkham City ahead.

The trailer from the Sony E3 press conference opens up with the cremation of the clown prince himself, the Joker, as voiceover kicks in to say “This is how the Batman died.” Jonathan Banks’ Commissioner Gordon then takes over, describing how crime went down after the death of the Joker, but it seems all is hardly well in Gotham.

The trailer/demo is in first-person, as a nightmare, induced by Scarecrow’s toxins, turns a quaint diner into a hellscape. It’s a sign of the Scarecrow Nightmare missions that will be part of the game, with exclusive ones set for the PlayStation 4 version.

And players won’t have to wait long to see how dangerous a Scarecrow-dominated world can be. Batman: Arkham Knight will release on June 23 for the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Windows PC.
