Tributes to the late Christopher Lee poured in on Thursday after it was revealed the 93-year-old actor had died on Sunday, and one of the most moving came from Peter Jackson. The Oscar-winning Lord of the Rings director — who made five films with Lee across the Rings and Hobbit franchises — wrote on Facebook that the thrill of working with the iconic actor ran second to their friendship.

“I remember him saying on my 40th Birthday (he was 80 at the time), ‘You’re half the man I am,'” Jackson wrote. “Being half the man Christopher Lee is, is more than I could ever hope for. He was a true gentleman, in an era that no longer values gentleman.”
