“Good news: I still exist,” Stephen Colbert announces in a video he posted Wednesday. As it turns out, his beard—er, his Colbeard—still exists, too. But it won’t for long.

Colbert explains how he’s enjoyed being incognito since the end of The Colbert Report in 2014—but it’s time for a change. “Now that we’re gearing up for the beginning of The Late Show, I need to be more cognito,” he says. “Plus, CBS is making me shave it off because Tom Selleck’s mustache has a non-compete clause.” Typical Tom Selleck’s mustache.

He goes on to shave off parts of his beard, first trying out a look that’s like the opposite of Hitler’s, then going for an Amish style before eventually settling on a clean-shaven face. “I’ll miss you, old friend,” he says to his trimmings, “but I’ll never forget our time together.”

Watch the whole delightful, kind of gross ordeal below:

The Late Show—which also launched its official Twitter account Wednesday—premieres on CBS Sept. 8.
