Liam Payne offered up his best wishes to ex-bandmate Zayn Malik during an interview with the UK’s Capital FM. The singer opened up about Malik’s recent departure from the popular boy band, saying, “he had to do what he had to do.”

“We’re just going to carry on as we’re doing. We’re all still great mates,” said Payne. “We wish him all the best.”

Payne addressed Malik’s decision to leave 1D saying, “It’s like anybody else’s job. Sometimes you have to move on because you’re not enjoying what you’re doing as much as you used to.”

The past few weeks seemingly haven’t been the easiest for the former bandmates as Malik and Louis Tomlinson engaged in a Twitter spat earlier this month. During their appearance on the Late Late Show, however, One Direction assured host James Corden the dispute had since been resolved. It seems like that’s true: On Sunday, the guys accepted the trophy for Top Duo/Group at the Billboard Music Awards, and delivered a special shout-out to their “brother,” Malik.
