Empire’s Bryshere “Yazz” Gray says he’s nothing like Hakeem Lyon, but he sure does dress like him. On Tuesday, during the launch of Brisk and streetwear brand Mishka’s apparel line in New York, the rapper-turned-actor revealed that he is the brains behind the youngest Lyon’s flashy style and that his character might have a different look in season 2.

“I’m probably the only character that gets to style himself,” he told EW. “But the thing is, I kinda styled the character how I dress, so maybe next season I’ll water it down a little bit.”

In addition to wardrobe, the show will feature a few more changes. Fox recently announced that season 2 will expand from 12  to 18 episodes, divided into two parts, and that Ne-Yo will collaborate with Timbaland on new original music. Gray also confirmed that filming starts in a few weeks.

“I know it’s gonna be crazy. As for my character, Hakeem Lyon, he’s gonna transition,” he teased. “I can’t tell you if it’s good or bad. But the Lyon family, it’s very dysfunctional right now.”

Empire will return Wednesday nights at 9 p.m. this fall.

Lee Daniels and Danny Strong created this Fox drama about a kingpin of hip-hop (played by Terrence Howard) and his family, who fight him for control of the empire.
