Prolific thespian Eric Roberts may not be the choosiest actor in the world when it comes to taking roles, but eyebrows were nevertheless raised when it was announced that the onetime Oscar nominee and Dark Knight actor had signed on to appear in Human Centipede 3 (out in cinemas and on VOD, May 22).
As it happens, those eyebrows could have been raised further still. Tom Six, who has written and directed all three movies in the infamous body-horror franchise, claims he also approached Sopranos star James Gandolfini about the part ultimately portrayed by Roberts, that of a state governor named Hughes.
“James Gandolfini, we approached him as well for the role of governor,” says Six. “I had James Gandolfini in mind and Eric Roberts. I was talking to them both. But when James Gandolfini read the script he was a little bit hesitant. Yeah, he backed off, and then he died, of course.”
Six says Roberts had no such qualms about appearing in the prison-set film, which also stars Dieter Laser from the first Human Centipede film, Laurence R. Harvey from Human Centipede 2, Tommy “Tiny” Lister, Robert LaSardo, and adult-film actress Bree Olson. “I was looking for an all-American actor with a great face,” says the director. “We approached him, and he loved the Human Centipede films, and we Skyped together, and he got the script, and he wanted to do it immediately.”
Check back later in the week for a longer interview with Six about the “100 percent poltically incorrect” Human Centipede 3.
