Julia Roberts remembers first David Letterman interview during final appearance
Julia Roberts, one of David Letterman’s most loyal guests, made her 26th and final Late Show appearance on Wednesday — and as it turns out, no one is more surprised by that number than Roberts herself.
Clad, appropriately enough, in a Letterman jacket, the actress recalled being nervous for her first David Letterman interview, which was to promote 1988’s Mystic Pizza.
“I, as a fan of the show, did not want to come on,” Roberts admitted, explaining that she had seen the host “absolutely dismember young actresses of [her] kind of peer group.” Letterman did not dispute the claim, but he did turn the interview into a therapy session for his younger self.
“What do you suppose was wrong with me?” Letterman asked.
Roberts’ answer summed up the host’s comedic legacy in a sentence: “I think stupid people annoy you.”
