Alex Garland talks possibility of 28 Weeks Later sequel
28 Days Later writer Alex Garland may not have taken part in the zombie franchise’s sequel, 28 Weeks Later, but in a recent interview, the Ex Machina director reignited some hope that a third film may see the undead light of day.
Speaking with Indiewire, Garland explained how after initially sitting out the sequel for fear of forcing out an idea, one came to him naturally that he thought would be suited to the 28 franchise.
“I had a sort of weird idea that popped into my head. Partly because of a trip I’d taken,” Garland said. “I had this thought, and I suggested it to Andrew [Macdonald] and Danny [Boyle], but I also said I don’t want to work on it.”
So Garland took his idea, which he called “pretty simple,” and handed it over to Macdonald, who produced the other films, to expand.
“Andrew said, ‘Leave it to me.’ So he’s gone off and is working on it,” Garland said.
Garland didn’t offer any details for his idea of what 28 Months Later—or whatever the potential threequel would actually be called—would be, and there’s no official word on the project’s status. A representative for DNA Films, the company behind the 28 franchise, did not respond to a request for comment.
