Ah, what a difference a year can make. It was just last June when Chance The Rapper was tweeting about meeting Kanye West after West’s headlining set at Bonnaroo:

But now he’s got West showing up to his OpenMikeChicago events and performing guest sets.

Chance has hosted the open mic events for local high school students regularly, and West has been all about his hometown this week — Chicago has repaid some of the favor: West received an honorary doctorate from the School of the Art Institute Monday — so perhaps his stopping by with fellow Chicago-born rapper Vic Mensa to perform “All Day” and “U Mad” should have come as no surprise. But either way, the young audience pops off in all clips, rapping along and going insane in a way that feels unique to an auditorium full of 16-year-olds.
