Fame is fickle. It lures in the naive and innocent, giving seemingly everything they want. But once the status quo shifts, it can just as easily take it all away. That’s what see hinted in the debut trailer of Jem and the Holograms, the live-action adaptation of the ’80s animated series directed by Jon M. Chu.

Jerrica Benton (Aubrey Peeples) minds her own business, making music at home, when someone uploads her jams to YouTube. Jerrica/Jem is then signed to a record label and becomes the next worldwide starlet, initiating her transformation into a Ziggy-like stage presence. Somewhat surprisingly, the fantasy and mystery elements aren’t present in this first clip.
