NBC is bringing in a familiar face for its live adaptation of The Wiz: Original Broadway cast member Stephanie Mills.
Mills, who portrayed Dorothy when the musical launched in 1975, will now play Auntie Em, as announced at the NBC Upfronts presentation. The network, meanwhile, is looking for “new talent” to play Dorothy.
The 1975 Broadway hit re-imagines The Wonderful Wizard of Oz with an all-black cast and a NYC-inspired Land of Oz. The live production, which is partnered with Cirque du Soleil, will follow NBC’s hugely successful 2013 hit A Sound of Music Live and last year’s comparatively disappointing Peter Pan Live.
The Wiz Live! will air Dec. 3 on NBC.
