As ABC bids farewell to its supernatural drama Forever, series star Ioan Gruffudd thanked fans for the opportunity to play the role of his “dreams.”

In the touching tribute posted on Instagram, Gruffudd wrote that he wasn’t expecting the cancellation as the studio and network “both loved the show.”

“This time the cards weren’t dealt in our favor. Show business is like that,” Gruffudd wrote. “Hell, life is like that. You ride to the top of the wave and then you come crashing down again.”

Gruffudd added that he couldn’t believe the response on Twitter as fans reacted to news, citing “the love, the sense of solidarity, the hope, the kindness, the support” as standout moments.

“Slowly I began to focus on what we had gained in the past year, rather than what we had lost in the last five minutes,” Gruffudd wrote. “I was overcome by a sense of gratitude. To have met you all and to have you all rooting for me and the show. At having a chance to play the role of my dreams, even if it was only for a year. To have been given the chance to bring Henry to life.”

ABC canceled Cristela, Resurrection, and The Taste on Thursday night, while renewing Agent Carter and (most surprisingly) Galavant. The network also renewed 10 dramas and six comedies, including Once Upon a Time, Scandal and Fresh Off the Boat.
