Tom Brokaw was diagnosed with multiple myeloma in August 2013 and battled his cancer, quietly, until last December, when he announced it was in remission. On Thursday, he’ll open up to the world about his fight.

NBC’s Dateline will air a special broadcast focusing on the beloved NBC News Special Correspondent called “Tom Brokaw: A Lucky Life Interrupted.” A brief preview of the program was released Tuesday that gave a glimpse of the broadcaster interviewing a doctor and his family about the ordeal. “It never occurred to me that I was going to die. I’m gonna beat this. No question,” he says in the upcoming special, via E!. “I’ll get through this somehow. That’s unrealistic in some ways.”

The special airs Thursday at 10 p.m. ET on NBC.
