We got a peek at Kehlani’s new tunes Monday when she shared “The Way” featuring Chance the Rapper. Shortly after, the Oakland singer followed it up by releasing You Should Be Here, a mixtape that includes “The Way” and 13 more tracks. Not to oversimplify her work, but it’s nice. As fun as the bangers, “Trap Queens,” and slow jams of the Billboard chart universe are, not everything has to be that. Kehlani and her few collaborators—including a great turn from BJ the Chicago Kid—create some good, fun R&B. There aren’t wild vocal exhibitions just to have them, though her voice isn’t incapable. Check out “The Letter” if you doubt her (but don’t do that). There’s some sneaky anger on the disarming “Yet.” Nothing on You Should Be Here will be Ariana Grande huge, but that’s okay. It’s generally happy. Be happy! Listen to Kehlani.
“Wanted”: A joyful love song with a hint of shade toward an ex
“Be Alright”: Come for the pipes, stay for the synth
“Down for You”: Snap along to prime BJ warbling
