Grey’s Anatomy is adding to its male ranks: Joe Adler (The Maze Runner, The Mentalist) has joined the show’s cast for at least a couple episodes at the end of the current season.

As first reported by THR, Adler will appear in the final episodes of season 11. He’ll reportedly play a new intern at Grey Sloan Memorial. Previously, actor Giacomo Gianniotti (Reign) was also announced to recur this season.

As we all learned last week, Grey’s killed off its male lead of 11 years, Dr. Derek Shepherd (Patrick Dempsey). The move not only creates an opportunity for new actors to get the spotlight on the long-running medical soap, but presumably frees up some of the show’s budget to go after potential new cast additions, as well. Neither actor is being billed as the new Dempsey, and there’s always the possibility—likelihood, even—of Grey’s adding a better-known name next season.

If you haven’t already checked it out, see our complete exclusive exit interview with Dempsey.

Meredith. Alex. Bailey. The doctors are definitely in on Shonda Rhimes' hospital melodrama.
