In March, 2013, a former New York cop named Gilberto Valle was convicted of conspiring to kidnap and eat women. Now, a new documentary called Thought Crimes: The Case of the Cannibal Cop details this extraordinary case and asks, per the official synopsis, “if someone can be found guilty for his or her most dangerous thoughts.” The film features interviews with Valle and his family, among others.

Directed by Erin Lee Carr, Thought Crimes is screening at the Tribeca Film Festival on April 25 and will premiere on HBO, May 11.
