New Zealand martial-arts action movie The Dead Lands has traveled a very great distance to reach these shores—and acquired some very impressive blurbs along the way. Lord of the Rings overlord Peter Jackson has heralded the film (out in theatres and on VOD April 17) as “one of the best films to come out of New Zealand in a long time,” while some guy called James Cameron described it as “far more than just a great action movie—it’s great cinema.”

Directed by Toa Fraser and set around 500 years ago, The Dead Lands stars James Rolleston as Hongi, a Maori chieftain’s teenage son who, per the official synopsis, “must avenge his father’s murder in order to bring peace and honor to the souls of his loved ones after his tribe is slaughtered through an act of treachery.” Does said vengeance-seeking inspire a good deal of action mayhem? Judging by both the trailer and the exclusive clip you can see below, it wouldn’t be a surprise in the least.
