ABC’s Castle took a big step toward an eighth season, but leadership behind the scenes is changing.

EW has learned that Nathan Fillion has signed on for another year of the detective drama. Castle is not yet renewed, but with its star secured for another season, the show is fully expected to come back when ABC picks their fall schedule in May.

Since Fillion wasn’t exactly expected to walk away from the show, perhaps the bigger news is what’s going on backstage. Showrunner David Amann is stepping down from the top creative post on the series. This is the second Castle showrunner shakeup within the past year. Last June, Amann replaced series creator Andrew Marlowe as showrunner. There’s no word yet on who will replace Amann, but we’re hearing there’s a search underway for a new lead writer-producer (and that Marlowe is not expected to come back). Amann has suggested to fans that this season will end in a cliffhanger, but the biggest mystery might be who’s going to replace him.

Ratings on the Monday night series fell about 15 percent this season, to 10.9 million viewers and a 2.3 rating among adults 18-49 when including DVR playback. It’s not unusual for a series to slip in this broadcast climate or at this stage of its run, but ABC doubtless would love to see some stablity or growth next fall.

Nathan Fillion and Stana Katic team up as a crime novelist and a homicide detective — but are they more than partners?
