Cannes director wants to stop 'grotesque' red carpet selfies
Bad news for Instagram accounts: While announcing this year’s Cannes Film Festival lineup, fest director Thierry Fremaux said he wanted celebrities to curtail their instincts to take selfies while walking the red carpet.
“We don’t want to prohibit it, but we want to slow down the process of selfies on the steps,” Thierry said. “We think it’s ridiculous and grotesque and really slows things down.”
Beyond the speed issue, there’s an aesthetic reason for the soft line against the popular class of photography as well: “You never look as ugly as you do in a selfie,” Fremaux said.
This year’s Cannes Film Festival lineup includes Pixar’s Inside Out (featuring the voices of Amy Poehler and Mindy Kaling), Woody Allen’s Irrational Man (with Emma Stone and Joaquin Phoenix), Todd Haynes’ Carol (with Cate Blanchett and Rooney Mara), Denis Villeneuve’s Sicario (with Emily Blunt and Josh Brolin) and Gus Van Sant’s Sea of Trees (with Matthew McConaughey). The festival runs from May 13-24.
