Billy Crystal pays tribute to David Letterman with musical farewell
Billy Crystal sang farewell to David Letterman on Tuesday night, with a rendition of “Sunrise, Sunset” that incorporated many of the fond memories Letterman has given his viewers over the years—from Stupid Pet Tricks to Richard Simmons.
Crystal, who first appeared on Letterman’s show in 1983, called the departing host his “best friend on television,” and joked that retirement will finally allow them to realize their dream of driving cross-country together and playing every miniature golf-course along the way—which is quite possibly the most Letterman-y stunt ever imagined.
Crystal’s thrown-together performance isn’t exactly Academy-Award-host caliber, but that seems appropriate. After all, Letterman hated the Oscars.
