The rapper Nas is no stranger to the world of cinema, having appeared in a handful of films even before this year’s Time is Illmatic. But with the new documentary Shake the Dust, Nas steps into a different role: He’s an executive producer, partnering with journalist-turned-filmmaker Adam Sjöberg. Their documentary explores the world of breakdancing beyond the New York City streets, charting the movement’s growth and resonance in slums, favelas, and ghettos across the globe. “We know we can’t dance our way out of poverty,” a voiceover on the trailer muses. “But breakdancing fills our hearts with hope.”
