Expect a lot of smizing at the Daytime Emmys this year.
That’s right: Tyra Banks is hosting the annual awards show, which honors soap opera actors, talk-show hosts, game-show hosts and everything in between. “I’m really excited,” Banks tells EW of her new gig. “I’m looking forward to pushing the envelope and being fun and irreverent, but also reverential and giving respect where it is due.”
Like many couch surfers, Banks has long been planning her chance to host daytime TV’s biggest night. “I think of the award shows like the Oscars, the Grammys, the VMAs, the MTV Movie Awards that I’ve produced from my couch and thought, ‘They should do this. They should do that.'” she says. But there is at least one fast-and-hard rule the America’s Next Top Modelhost has for the big night.
“I don’t like it when people pull out a speech. I think people at home want to just feel your emotion,” says Banks. “I always think, ‘How many speeches have people tucked in their pockets—or inside dresses or cleavage—that they go home and they didn’t win?’ I want things to be spontaneous.”
The 42nd Annual Daytime Emmy Awards airs Sunday, April 26 at 8 p.m. on Pop.
