Before he was BDSM-obsessed businessman Christian Grey in the Fifty Shades of Grey movie, Jamie Dornan played a serial killer in the BBC’s The Fall.

He admitted to the Los Angeles Times on Monday that in order to prepare for the role, he followed a woman off the train one day to “see what it felt like to pursue someone like that.”

“It felt kind of exciting, in a really sort of dirty way,” Dornan told the Times. “I’m sort of not proud of myself. But I do honestly think I learned something from it, because I’ve obviously never done any of that. It was intriguing and interesting to enter that process of ‘What are you following her for?’ and ‘What are you trying to find out?”

In The Fall, which debuted in the U.K. in 2013, Dornan plays Peter Paul Spector, a dad, husband, bereavement counselor and serial killer being pursued by North Ireland investigator Stella Gibson (Gillian Anderson).

Netflix brought the show, now with two seasons under its belt, to the U.S. in January.
