At long last, Ben “B-Roc” Ruttner and James “JPatt” Patterson—who produce music as The Knocks—have found their sound. And not for lack of trying: “It feels like these past four years, we were trying to figure it out. This finally feels like we’ve finally figured it out,” says B-Roc about their EP So Classic, due out April 7th on Big Beat/Neon Gold.

After a couple years of tinkering—different production, different singer—the duo headed to Los Angeles and found some answers with Chris Caswell. “He’s an incredible musician,” B-Roc says of the producer-composer. “He’s the one who helped us re-do the piano part which gave it that really classic feeling—that Studio 54-thing. That gave it a whole new life.”

After that, their focus turned to finding a new vocalist. While the guys had never heard Alex Newell before (i.e. Unique from Glee!), it wasn’t long before they realized what B-Roc is still saying: “His voice is out of this world!” Newell is featured on their newest track, “Collect My Love”—a bright, sunny, ’70s-screaming dance tune.

As for the lyrics? “We like to be as involved as we can. Sometimes we get a vocal back we’re so happy with, we don’t want to touch it. But at the end of the day, it’s our project,” says JPatt. (JPatt actually does the vocals featured on “Dancing With Myself,” which dropped earlier this month.)
