Now we know why the Army of the 12 Monkeys has been one step ahead at every turn: Ramse (Kirk Acevedo), was revealed to be working with them during Friday’s episode of 12 Monkeys.

After squaring off with Cole (Aaron Stanford) in 1987 by thwarting his attempts to prevent Leland Goines (Zeljko Ivanek) from obtaining the virus, Ramse was thrown in a Japanese prison to presumably live out his days in the past.

But Olivia (Alisen Down), aka the Striking Woman, sent him encouraging letters throughout his prison sentence, eventually bringing him into the fold after he served his time. After witnessing a time paradox caused by the Pallid Man’s pendant in the present and the one Ramse got from Jennifer Goines (Emily Hampshire) in the future, Ramse decided to work with the Army in a bid to stop Cole once and for all by helping Goines’ company cultivate the plague that will eventually wipe out most of mankind.

It was always planned from the first minute,” executive producer Terry Matalas tells EW of Ramse’s presence in the past. “In fact, if you go back and watch the season, there are lots of little clues we planted along the way. We thought it would be really interesting to make the moral center of the show someone who would turn and do something pretty horrible in the name of someone you love.”

However, Ramse did not kill Cole, like he had assumed. Near death after being stabbed by Ramse, our weary time traveler was jettisoned to 2015, where he realizes the Army has been one step ahead of them this whole time because Ramse is actually the Witness. Or is he? “You’ve got to stay tuned,” Matalas says coyly.

12 Monkeys airs Fridays at 9 p.m. ET on Syfy.

Syfy takes on the original time-traveling film in a weekly series format.
