Ryan Gosling’s directorial debut Lost River has inspired a lot of strong feelings over the past year. When the film played at Cannes, it was met with both cheers and boos while the movie’s screening at the recent SXSW Festival prompted a marriage proposal. Now that, folks, is a positive review.

Starring Christina Hendricks, Eva Mendes, Saoirse Ronan, Ian De Caestecker, Reda Kateb, Matt Smith, horror icon Barbara Steele, and the always great but now also white-hot Ben Mendelsohn, Lost River is released April 10 and will also be available to watch on VOD from that date. According to the official synopsis, the film is “a dark fairy-tale about love, family and the fight for survival in the face of danger. In the virtually abandoned city of Lost River, Billy, a single mother of two, is led into a macabre underworld in her quest to save her childhood home and hold her family together. Her teenage son Bones discovers a mystery about the origins of Lost River that triggers his curiosity and sets into motion an unexpected journey that will test his limits and the limits of those he loves.”

You can get a flavor of how macabre matters get in the exclusive featurette below, which features both expletives and, it is fair to say, a moment of extreme gruesomeness.
