'Game of Thrones': Some characters missing from season 5 premiere
Game of Thrones returns April 12, but you’ll to wait at least an extra week to see some key characters.
An audience in London got the first look at the Thrones season 5 world premiere Wednesday night. The early reviews are very positive—here’s some spoiler-free excerpts from the UK press. But as in recent seasons, not every character is re-introduced in the sprawling tale’s first episode back.
This editing strategy allows us to spend more time with the stories that are in the episode, and keeps the show’s pace from feeling too rushed—as well as the complex tale from being too confusing. We’re not going to reveal any of the story details that are leaking out in the reviews. But for those who really want to know, here’s which characters you can expect to see (and which you will not):
The season 5 opener has plenty of Tyrion (Peter Dinklage), Daenerys (Emila Clarke), Jon Snow (Kit Harington) and Cersei (Lena Headey), along with some Brienne (Gwendoline Christie), Sansa (Sophie Turner) and others. But at least one fan favorite is absent—there’s no Arya (Maisie Williams). (Don’t worry, Arya fans—we hear the second episode really makes up for that.) Also, Theon/Reek (Alfie Allen) doesn’t show up quite yet either. And though we’re traveling to the kingdom of Dorne for the first time this season, don’t expect to get there the first week.
Here’s what the Thrones stars were wearing on the red carpet for the London premiere, and a post on the arrival of the Iron Throne in London. Check out these two new clips from the first episode as well:
